Howard Wright scored 21 points and freshman Adam Keefe made two of four free throws in the final 48 seconds Saturday as 16th-ranked Stanford edged Oregon State, 60-58.

Stanford (23-5 overall, 14-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference) took a 58-56 lead on Wright’s basket with 1:30 to go.

But Oregon State’s Gary Payton sank a pair of free throws with 58 seconds remaining to tie the score.

Keefe hit one of two free throws with 48 seconds left to make it 59-58. The Beavers, who dropped to 19-6 and 11-5, called a timeout with 41 seconds left and worked for the final shot.

Eric Knox, surrounded by Stanford defenders, missed a 10-foot bank shot with 10 seconds to go. The ball bounced to Payton, but his 16-foot jumper also missed.

Keefe grabbed the rebound with one second to go, was fouled and made one of two free throws for the final margin.

The intense contest included a shoving match between Payton and Stanford’s Eric Reveno in the second half.

The Beavers hit just 36% of their shots, compared to 49% for Stanford. Payton was 6 for 20 but still led the Beavers with 19 points.

Todd Lichti was 6 for 18, scoring 14 points. Reveno contributed 15 for the Cardinal.
