Home Runs Spark UCSD to 14-4 Victory

Two home runs helped boost the UC San Diego baseball team to a 14-4 victory over host Whittier College Tuesday.

UCSD’s Gary Fessia hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and Karl Freidel hit a three-run homer in the eighth.

Freidel also had a double and four runs batted in. Mike Morgan (3-1) was the winner for UCSD (6-3). Whittier is 4-5.

Cal State San Bernardino (9-1) scored six runs in the sixth inning in a 10-6 victory over visiting Point Loma Nazarene. John Danis hit his third home run in the second inning for Point Loma (4-6). Darrin Kay (1-0) was the winner for San Bernardino (4-6).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego defeated visiting San Diego State, 5-4. USD’s Jennifer Larking defeated Sondra Mitchell, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.

In doubles, the Aztecs (2-5) won at No. 1 by default, and Jessica Buss and Sondra Mitchell then defeated USD’s Kelly Jewell and Tonya Fuller at No. 2. USD is 6-3.

Point Loma Nazarene lost, 8-1, to UC Riverside. No. 6 singles player Jackie Garcia defeated Nicky Singer, 6-3, 7-5, for Point Loma (3-4).

BOXING

San Diego’s Jesus Salud won the vacant North American Boxing Federation super-bantamweight championship with a second-round knockout of Romero Adames of Houston in a scheduled 12-round title bout.

Salud (121 3/4 pounds) knocked Adames down for an eight-count late in the second round with a right cross, then caught him with a booming left hook in the second to end the fight at the Forum.

Adames (122) was counted out at 57 seconds of the round.

Salud is 26-3, with 15 knockouts. Adames, who had knocked out 18 of his foes, is 21-4.

ADMINISTRATION

Herbert C. Meyer, El Camino High School’s athletic director, has been recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Assn. as a certified athletic administrator. To earn this honor, Meyer demonstrated the highest level of knowledge and expertise in the field of interscholastic athletic administration.
