Share

A moderate earthquake, registering magnitude 4.7, rolled through the Imperial County desert near the Salton Sea, scaring residents but causing little damage and no injuries. “You could hear it coming like a freight train,” said Mike Aleksick, assistant chief of the fire district in Niland, a hamlet about 30 miles north of El Centro. Aleksick said damage was limited to knocking a construction trailer cockeyed and briefly interrupting power generation at a nearby geothermal electric plant. “There have been a swarm of earthquakes in this area over the last few weeks, but this was by far the largest,” Caltech spokesman Robert Finn said.
