College Roundup : Westmont Loses Pair at Cal Lutheran

Cal Lutheran used power hitting in the opener and capitalized on mistakes in the second game to sweep a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader over Westmont, 6-5 and 5-3, Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

Anthony Espitia’s tie-breaking home run with two out in the seventh and final inning carried Cal Lutheran in the opener. Espitia finished the game two for four with two runs batted in and scored two runs.

Teammates Devon Schutzler and Jeff Brouelette also homered in the opener.

Senior right-hander Jay Anderson (2-1) went the full seven innings, allowing four hits to earn the win. He walked one and struck out six, giving him a team-leading 20 strikeouts.

Cal Lutheran (11-4, 4-0 in the conference), benefiting from four walks, two hits, two wild pitches, a hit batter and an error, scored five times in the first inning of the second game.

Junior right-hander Mike Clark (2-0) went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) to claim the victory.

Dean Martinez allowed one hit over the final three innings to earn his first save. Martinez walked three and struck out two.

Brouelette went two for three in the second game.

In other baseball games:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 19, Cal State Northridge 5--Damon Neidlinger had two home runs and a double and drove in four runs to lead Dominguez Hills in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at CSUN.

The Matadors lost their fourth consecutive game, all in conference play, and went through five pitchers.

Starter Robert Wheatcroft suffered his first loss in six decisions. Dominguez Hills led, 10-1, after three innings. Eleven of the team’s 21 hits went for extra bases.

CSUN was led offensively by senior Ted Weisfuss, who hit his first two home runs as a Matador. Both came with the bases empty.

Rusty McLain and Chae-Ho Chong each had three hits for CSUN. McLain had two RBIs and Chong scored twice.

Dominguez Hills’ Ron Veazey became the fifth left-hander of the season to beat the Matadors, who have won against left-handers twice.

Valley 8, Cuesta 4--After 7 1/2 innings, Cuesta held a two-run lead but Valley took advantage of five errors to score six runs in the eighth inning of a Western State Conference game at Valley.

Monarch shortstop Ray Sabado was two for five and extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Mike Caputi was three for four with an RBI double and Mark Cavaretta was two for three for Valley (15-2-1, 3-1).

Oxnard 10, Pierce 6--John Swanson collected four hits, including a double and homer, to lead Oxnard (8-4, 3-1) to the Western State Conference victory at Pierce. Swanson drove in three runs and scored two.

Steve Cerio, Tim Bohling and Aaron Marcarelli each had two hits for Oxnard.

Santa Barbara 5, Moorpark 2--Mike Kissick pitched a nine-hitter and used three double plays to turn back Moorpark (13-6, 3-2) in a Western State conference game at Moorpark.

Canyons 4, Glendale 3--Gary Morgan and Randy Cooper were each three for four as the Cougars survived a late Glendale rally to win a WSC game at Glendale.

D’Tan McWhorter hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to bring the Vaqueros to within a run. Canyons improved to 9-8, 3-2 in conference play.

The Master’s 15, Philadelphia Textile--Eleven players had hits for Master’s in the nonleague game at Master’s.

Mark MacArthur led the 19-hit attack with a single, double and triple and three RBIs.

Rick Simpson (2-1) got the win in relief.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 5, San Diego 1--DeeAndra Pilkington was three for three and scored twice to pace the Regals (8-5) in the final of the eight-team Cal Lutheran Invitational.

San Diego 9, Cal Lutheran 8 (8 innings)--Angie Rais sacrificed in the winning run in the eighth inning as San Diego overcame the Regals’ six-run first inning.

Cal Lutheran 8, Azusa Pacific 4--Julie Monarrez had two RBIs and scored twice and Katie Kjonegard hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning to lead the Regals.
