Christian Heritage Beaten by One in Regional Final

Kyle Lundy made two free throws with 11 seconds remaining Saturday as Southern California College defeated Christian Heritage College, 89-88, in the West Regional final of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Assn. basketball tournament at Costa Mesa.

A 15-foot jumper by All-American guard Mark Kraatz with 3 seconds left bounced in and out as Christian Heritage finished the season 24-9 in only its third collegiate season. SCC (29-4) advances to the quarterfinals Thursday at Chattanooga, Tenn. Christian Heritage and SCC split two regular season games.

Christian Heritage led, 88-85, on a three-pointer by Kraatz with 47 seconds remaining as the Hawks overcame an 11-point second-half deficit. Phil Hill then scored on a layup 20 seconds later for the Vanguards. Bill Soucie missed the front end of a one-and-one with 25 seconds left and SCC got the rebound to set up Lundy’s free throws.

SCC, the regular season NAIA District 3 champions, led 48-41 at the half. Brad Soucie led the Crusaders with 32 points and senior Bill Soucie had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Dave Kirksey added 15 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Crusaders. Center Jeff Bickmore and guard Terry Scruggs had 21 apiece for the Vanguards.

MEN’S TENNIS

Chris Toomey and Mark Farren defeated Jimmy Weilbaecher and Andre Janasik, 6-3, 6-0, as No. 21 University of San Diego defeated visiting North Carolina, 5-4.

San Diego State lost to 23rd-ranked Arizona State, 5-1, in a nonconference match at Tempe.

The Aztecs’ lone winner was Woody Yocum, who defeated Dan Martin at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Arizona State (9-3) won three three-set matches. The Aztecs dropped to 4-10.

BASEBALL

Rick Rupkey (5-0) remained undefeated as UC San Diego defeated host La Verne, 5-1, before dropping the nightcap, 10-8, in a nonconference doubleheader.

Karl Friedl was two for four for the Tritons, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III.

Catcher Gene Northway had solo home runs in the fourth and ninth innings for UCSD (10-6) in the second game. Chris Murphy, who was three for three, had a two-run homer in eighth for the Tritons. Ron Hubel (2-2) got the victory and added a three-run homer in the third.

Point Loma Nazarene committed five errors in a 6-0 loss in the first game against Christ College but rallied to play errorless ball to win the nightcap, 11-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Point Loma.

Mark Ratekin (0-3) allowed two unearned runs and six hits in the loss as the Crusaders had three errors in the first inning.

Christ College (2-12-1, 1-3) returned the favor with seven errors of its own in the second game as PLNC won behind a two-hitter from David Pierce (4-2). John Danis was two for three with four RBIs for PLNC (7-9, 2-2).

USD swept a doubleheader from Iona winning the first game, 4-2, and the second game, 12-3.

James Ferguson (2-4) was the winning pitcher in the first game, Tony Battilega (1-2) in the second.

USD (10-8) has won five in a row. Iona is 0-5.

Pepperdine (11-8-1) got three runs in the 10th inning to defeat SDSU, 5-3, at Smith Field.

Britt Craven (3-2) picked up the win, Paul Austin (0-1) was the loser.

SDSU’s Jeff Barry scored two runs and had three hits in four at bats, including a double.

The Aztecs fell to 11-7.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State (5-5) defeated visiting New Mexico, 8-1.

Sondra Mitchell defeated Chris Hoffee, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and Kristin Hill defeated Melonie Breed, 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to lead the Aztecs.

MEN’S TRACK

Arizona defeated visiting SDSU 100-60. SDSU’s Wil Foster won the triple jump (49-0 3/4) and the high jump (6-8 3/4). Aztec Jeff Holds won the pole vault (15 feet).

Point Loma Nazarene College took first place in a track meet at Santa Barbara’s La Playa Stadium.

The men finished with 84 points, 38 ahead of second-place Redlands.

Dan Raatjes’ first-place mark in the high jump of 6-feet, 10 3/8-inches led the way for the Crusaders.

Other PLNC first-place finishers included: Christian Andreasson, 22-0 in the long jump; Kwane Moore, 14.6 in the 110 hurdles; John Toro, 49.6 in the 400 meters; and Mike Maynard, 1:56.8 in the 800 meters.

WOMEN’S TRACK

San Diego State (2-1) defeated Arizona, 87-47, led by Michelle Stevens, Carolyn Peters and Karen Nilson.
