Prep Roundup : Laguna Beach’s Volleyball Team Takes the Title

Laguna Beach High School defeated University, 15-2, 15-4, in the title game of the 16-team Orange County boys’ volleyball championship Saturday night at Estancia High School.

Sean Stafford of Laguna Beach, an outside hitter, was voted the tournament’s most valuable player. Teammate John Cummings was also picked to the all-tournament team along with Stephan Mumaw (University), Ty Price (Corona del Mar), Dan Williams (El Toro), Darren Lance (Edison) and Scott Drake (Huntington Beach).

Laguna Beach defeated Edison, 16-14, 15-13, and University defeated Corona del Mar, 16-14, 15-3, in the semifinal round.

Fountain Valley defeated Mission View, 15-10, in the one-game consolation championship.

In the Corona softball tournament:

El Toro 7, San Clemente 2--Paige Lauby (4-0) worked the final 3 1/3 innings in relief for her fourth victory of the week. She was picked as the tournament’s most valuable player. Jennifer Jourden hit a three-run home run in the fifth to give El Toro a 4-2 lead. El Toro is 5-1, San Clemente is 3-2.

In nonleague play:

Sunny Hills 2-1, Canyon 1-4--Amy Huett (2-0) had 15 strikeouts in the first game for visiting Sunny Hills (2-1), which scored both runs on wild pitches. Senetha Thomas had two hits and two RBIs in the second game for Canyon (4-1).
