Local News in Brief : Homeless Paraplegic Has Heart Surgery

Share

George Donovan, the homeless paraplegic who turned up in a Kansas hospital a week after he was robbed of his wheelchair on Los Angeles’ Skid Row, was reported in good condition Thursday after surgery to remove an arterial blockage near his heart.

Officials at Bethany Medical Center in Kansas City declined comment on Donovan, but other sources at the hospital said he was resting comfortably in intensive care after an angioplasty operation late Wednesday. The operation involved the insertion of a balloon-like device that was inflated to reopen the artery.

Donovan was expected to be back in a semi-private room today, ready to contact the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles about the offers of help that have been flowing in since the story of the robbery was reported last week.

Officials at the Rescue Mission say that at least 90 people have phoned and written with offers of assistance.
