The Preps : Baseball Roundup : Valenta’s Hit Gives Foothill 5-4 Victory Over Canyon

Bob Valenta’s bases-loaded single in the seventh inning gave Foothill High School a 5-4 victory over Canyon in a Century League baseball game Friday at Foothill.

With the score tied, 4-4, David Downs led off the seventh with a single to left. After consecutive walks to Eric Garcia and Corey Parker, Valenta singled to right to drive in the game-winning run.

The Knights (5-2 overall, 1-0 in league play) led, 4-0, after six innings, but Canyon (0-1 in league play) scored four runs in the seventh. Marty Little had the big hit for the Comanches, with a three-run homer to left.

Foothill built its lead on RBI singles by Courtney Keyler in the second and Brad Briedenbecker in the fourth.

Todd Henropin got the victory in relief. Henropin (1-0) pitched to one batter in the seventh.

Valenta and Keyler each had two hits for Foothill.

In other Century League games:

El Modena 12, Santa Ana Valley 4--Cale Shepherd went four with four with two triples, a double and a grand slam to lead El Modena at Santa Ana Valley.

Santa Ana 4, Villa Park 3--Victor Franco squeezed home Bobby Reimers in the top of the eighth for the winning run. Jesse Rojas hit a home run to help Santa Ana (1-0 in league). Erin Boone went three for three with a double for Villa Park (2-5, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 9, Sonora 8--David Karraba sacrificed in the winning run at Sonora. Tim Moore (three for four with three stolen bases), David Stevens (three RBIs), Mark Moreno (two RBIs) and Rob Szente (three for four) helped La Habra (5-2, 1-0).

Sunny Hills 11, Fullerton 10--Jeff White hit a solo home run in bottom of the seventh for the Lancers (5-3, 1-0). White had three hits and two RBIs and Jeff Kight had three hits and three RBIs for Sunny Hills. Fullerton (0-1 in league play) scored six runs in the third to take a 7-1 lead. The Lancers went ahead, 10-7, by scoring four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Chris Rubel hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the score, 10-10.

Troy 8, Buena Park 3--Brad Zeppieri (1-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 11 to lead Troy (3-1, 1-0) at Buena Park. Tom Furakawa went three for four with a triple and a double, and Darby Carmichael went two for three with three RBIs to help Troy.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 4, Valencia 2--Mike Hudak had two RBIs to lead Brea (5-4, 1-0) at home. Aaron Charlton (1-0) gave up five hits and struck out seven for the victory.

In the Serra tournament:

Orange Lutheran 5, Huntington Park 3--The Lancers got only two hits in the victory at Orange Lutheran.
