THE PREPS : Roundup : Western Takes 1-0 Victory Over Woodbridge in Softball

Catcher Lisa Sciarrino hit a double in the top of the eighth inning to give Western High School a 1-0 victory over Woodbridge in 4-A division pool play of the Canyon softball tournament Friday at Canyon High School.
The Pioneers (9-1) had runners on first and second with no outs in the eighth, when Sciarrino hit a ground-rule double to left field.
Beth Qubypo pitched seven innings for the victory. Qubypo (1-0) struck out four and allowed only four hits.
Qubypo needed help from Dawn Fowler and Sciarrino in the bottom of the eighth. Fowler entered the game with no outs and a runner on second. Sciarrino picked the runner off and Fowler struck out the last two batters for the save.
In other 4-A division games:
La Mirada 8, Los Amigos 0 (5 innings)--Dena Mullins (3-0) pitched a perfect game and had 11 strikeouts to lead La Mirada (4-0) at Canyon. Catcher Rose Garces had two hits and scored two runs. Mullins came back Friday evening and pitched a no-hitter in a 9-0 victory over Rolling Hills.
Sunny Hills 3, Garden Grove 2--Erin McKinney drove in three runs for Sunny Hills (3-2).
Garden Grove 2, Millikan 0--Garden Grove (3-3) scored twice in the seventh inning. Stephanie Smith pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.
In 5-A division games:
Huntington Beach 3, Cypress 0--Sophomore pitcher Dana Jahr (2-1) gave up five hits for Huntington Beach (2-2). Cypress is 1-2.
San Diego Santana 4, Westminster 0--Shelly Hawkins (2-1) pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts to lead Santana (3-2).
In nonleague softball:
Orange Lutheran 19, Liberty Christian 9--Catcher Amy Dupont had three RBI singles to lead Orange Lutheran (3-1) at home. Pam Marty also had three hits, including a run-scoring triple to help the Lancers.
In nonleague golf:
Edison 211, Los Amigos 265--Tom Quist shot a two-over 38 to lead Edison (2-4) at SeaCliff golf course.
In nonconference boys’ swimming:
Orange 74, Katella 60--Matt Maresh had a Southern Section qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke to lead the Panthers (4-1) at Orange. Maresh won the backstroke in 1 minute .78 seconds.
Los Altos 96, Sonora 60--Joe Rivas won the 50-yard freestyle (22.8) and the 100 butterfly (57.7) for Los Altos at Los Altos. Casey Pearce won the 500 freestyle (5:03.17) for Sonora (1-1).
In nonconference girls’ swimming:
Katella 68, Orange 67--At Orange, the meet came down the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, which the Knights won in 4:15.97.
Los Altos 98, Sonora 56--Katherine Rivas won the 50 freestyle (26.56) and 100 freestyle (57.05) for Los Altos at Los Altos. Carrie Hebert won the 100 breaststroke (1:26.71) for Sonora (1-1).
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 1, St. Paul 1--Dax Peterson won his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, to lead the Monarchs (6-1, 3-0) at Mater Dei.
In Orange League tennis:
Anaheim 10, Magnolia 8--Nghia Vo swept his sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead Anaheim (1-3, 1-2) at home. Anaheim’s No. 1 doubles team of brothers Son and Tony Nguyen helped Anaheim, winning, 6-2, 6-4.
Valencia 11, Brea-Olinda 7--Danny Yu swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, as the Tigers (3-3, 3-0) won all nine singles sets at Brea-Olinda.
Western 14, Savanna 4--Ed Peregrino won his sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, for the Pioneers (7-2, 2-1) at Western.
In nonleague tennis:
El Toro 13, Foothill 5--Chris Brown swept, 7-6, 6-4, 6-1, as the Chargers (8-0) won seven of nine singles sets at El Toro.
Irvine 17, Trabuco Hills 1--Cory Beacham swept his singles sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for the Vaqueros (4-3) at Irvine.
Mission Viejo 12, Laguna Beach 6--Mission Viejo (9-0) swept the doubles matches at Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach (4-1) played without its two top players, Jon Leach and Graham Gillis, who are playing at the Easter Bowl tournament in Florida.
In Garden Grove League volleyball:
Garden Grove 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Guy Nelson and Joe Squyres each had 15 kills as Garden Grove (2-3, 2-0) swept, 15-5, 15-3, 15-7, at Garden Grove.
Pacifica 3, Los Amigos 0--Jason Guthrie had 11 kills and Eric Cadacio had 19 assists, as Pacifica (2-1, 2-0) swept, 15-2, 15-3, 15-5, at Los Amigos.
In Pacific Coast League volleyball:
Laguna Hills 3, Costa Mesa 1--Trent DeVreugd had 11 kills and 11 blocks as the Hawks (2-4, 1-2) won, 15-13, 11-15, 15-6, 15-7, at Costa Mesa.
