College Roundup : Peters, Bunch Power Titans to 7-3 Victory Over Gonzaga

Rex Peters and Paul Bunch hit home runs to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 7-3 victory over Gonzaga Sunday in a nonconference baseball game at Titan Field.

Peters’ two-run home run in the fifth inning gave Fullerton (17-6) a 5-2 lead. The homer extended his hitting steak to 23 games. Peters, a senior from Orange Coast College, is hitting .360 (31 of 86) and leads the team with 12 doubles.

Bunch, a junior outfielder from Cypress College, hit an opposite-field home run off the scoreboard in right-center to give Fullerton a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Huck Flener (6-0) pitched the first five innings for the victory. James Popoff pitched the ninth for the save.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, Clemson 3--Irvine’s Mark Kaplan, the 72nd-ranked player in the nation, defeated No. 7 ranked John Sullivan, 6-2, 6-2, at Irvine. It was the 13th consecutive victory for Kaplan, who has won 10 sets in a row. Irvine (12-5) is ranked fourth. Clemson (13-5) is ranked 10th.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 8, Northwestern 3--Fullerton (19-4) scored three runs in the first and led, 7-0, before Northwestern scored three runs in the sixth.

Cal Sate Fullerton 2, Iowa 0--Ann Van Dortrecht (8-2) pitched a two-hitter.

In nonconference men’s volleyball:

Ohio State 3, UC Irvine 2--Visiting Ohio State won, 15-6, 6-15, 15-6, 1-15, 15-12. Ohio State is 3-9; Irvine 5-21.
