University of the Pacific 5, Cal State Northridge 4--Mark Troutner drove in more runs, but teammate Dan Denczek got credit for the game-winning hit as Pacific won the nonconference game at CSUN.
Troutner picked up a run batted in with a double, hit a two-run home run and a solo home run for Pacific (10-14) before Denczek drove a single to right to knock in the winning run in the ninth off losing pitcher Robert Wheatcroft (6-2).
Left-handed starter Steve Pirolli had a two-hit shutout until Rusty McLain hit a three-run home run to tie the score, 3-3, in the sixth. Pirolli had a 16.45 earned-run average entering the game.
Anton Siegl’s pinch-hit home run in the seventh gave the Matadors (13-8-1) a 4-3 lead. David Cloninger (2-2), a distant cousin of former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Tony Cloninger, allowed one hit in the final two innings for the win.
