College Baseball : Cerritos Leaves Canyons Stranded, 12-4

College of the Canyons loaded the bases with none out in each of the first two innings but failed to score and went on to lose to Cerritos, 12-4, in the second round of the Allan Hancock baseball tournament in Santa Maria on Thursday.

The Cougars, who left 15 men on base Wednesday, stranded 12 against Cerritos. Randy Cooper led off with a solo home run for Canyons and Gary Morgan had two doubles.

Cerritos, ranked No. 1 in the state, improved to 22-3.

Canyons (12-10) will play Hancock for third place today at 2:30.

Valley 7, Chaffey 6--Mike Caputi’s sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Steve Roth to cap a three-run, ninth-inning rally for host Valley in a nonconference game.

The Monarchs (20-3), who trailed, 6-4, after eight innings, tied the score in the ninth on Matt Arnold’s fielder’s choice with the bases loaded and a run-scoring single by Greg Struhl. Mark Cavaretta was three for four and E. J. Pape had two hits and two RBIs for Valley. Tim DeGrasse (6-0) earned the victory in relief.
