Outfielder Dave Winfield of the New York Yankees is scheduled for surgery today to remove a herniated disk and will miss at least half the season.
Winfield, 37, will be operated on by Dr. Robert Watkins at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood.
The best estimate by a club spokesman was that Winfield could be back by late July or early August.
Last season, Winfield hit .322 with 25 homers and 107 runs batted in. He has two more years left on a 10-year contract with the Yankees and will earn $1,858,862 million this season.
