College Roundup : Titans Win Again, 2-0, in Softball Tournament

Cal State Fullerton picked up its fourth consecutive victory in the Pony softball tournament at Fullerton by shutting out Northwestern, 2-0, in championship round play Friday.

Fullerton scored in the third inning. Malia Ouzts came home on a fielder’s choice by Nikki Lewis, and Missy Coombes scored on a wild pitch by Amy Redmer.

Sophomore pitcher Anjie Bryant picked up her 11th victory against one loss for the Titans (23-4). She allowed three hits and had two strikeouts.

In other championship-round games:

Arizona 3, Oregon 2 (10 innings)--Christin Gautier scored the winning run for Arizona on a throwing error by Katy Wiese with two outs in the top of the 10th.

Oklahoma State 1, Nebraska 0--Lisa Harvey hit a home run in the top of the seventh for Oklahoma State.

Cal State Long Beach 3, Bowling Green 0--Third-ranked Long Beach was led by freshman outfielder Kellie Kane, who had a double. Annette Gonzales (6-4) got the victory for Long Beach (17-12). Bowling Green is 2-13.

Fresno State 1, United States International University 0--Junior catcher Shelly Stokes hit a double that drove in pinch-runner Dina Lopez for top-ranked Fresno (23-2). USIU is 12-15-1.

Cal Poly Pomona 1, Utah 0--Lori Thompson (10-2) was the winning pitcher for the seventh-ranked Broncos (21-7). Nikki Busch’s single scored Denise Correa in the seventh. Utah is 11-15.

Fresno State 4, Nebraska 3--Edison graduate Terry Carpenter (13-1) picked up the victory.

In the UC Irvine men’s tennis tournament:

UC Irvine 6, Nebraska 3--Mark Kaplan, Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, won for the 14th consecutive time as he defeated Steven Jung, 6-4, 6-3, to lead the host Anteaters (13-5). Richard Lubner won, 6-4, 6-3; Shige Kanroji won, 6-7 6-2, 6-4, and Mike Roberts won, 6-2, 6-0, in singles for Irvine. Mike Briggs and Trevor Kronemann won, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles. Irvine plays host to Mississippi today at 1:30 in one semifinal match.

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:

USC 3, UC Irvine 0--Tom Duke had 12 kills to lead the fourth-ranked Trojans (22-7 overall, 10-5) to a 15-4, 15-4, 15-6 sweep in Irvine’s Crawford Hall. Steve Florentine had 10 kills for the Anteaters (5-22, 0-16).
