THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : OCC Uses Fast Start to Beat Golden West

Orange Coast College scored eight runs in the first inning on its way to a 16-6 victory over Golden West Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game at OCC.

Hector Santa Cruz doubled twice and scored two runs, and Mike Kelly hit a two-run home run in the first for Orange Coast (19-7-1, 6-4). Scott Talanoa also hit a home run, his conference-leading ninth for OCC. Jason Young had four hits and Santa Cruz and Talanoa each had three for Orange Coast.

Ryan Thibault (5-1) pitched a nine-hitter with a season-high 15 strikeouts for Orange Coast. Josh Bammer hit a two-run home run for Golden West (12-8-1, 6-3).

Cypress 15, Riverside 4--Sophomore Dennis Burbank (8-4) pitched the first 5 1/3 innings for host Cypress (19-9, 5-4).

Cypress led, 6-3, but scored seven times in the seventh to break the game open. With one out, Brett Gregory was hit by a pitch, Joe Gonzalez walked, then Ken Kendrena hit a three-run home run. With two outs, Steve Gill tripled and Mitch Kaylor reached on an error, allowing Gill to score.

Jason Friedman then singled, and Doug Yates was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bobby Thome walked to force in a run and an error on a ground ball hit by Gregory allowed two more runs to score. Earlier, Friedman doubled to increase his hitting streak to 19 games.

Riverside (4-16-1, 1-8-1) made seven errors.

Fullerton 6, Saddleback 5 (11 innings)--Greg Gistlinck led off the 11th with a game-winning home run for host Fullerton (9-14, 4-6). It was his first home run of the the season. Gistlinck also tied the score, 5-5, with a two-out single in the eighth. Both hits came off losing pitcher Todd Bush (3-1). Gistlinck’s single in the eighth came after a two-out error. Norm Hunter (2-2) picked up the victory in relief.

Fullerton took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a three-run home run by Sal Capraro. Larry Maddoux and Ted Savage had two hits and an RBI each for Saddleback (11-7-1, 3-5-1).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 8, Cypress 1--Ed Peregrino won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and Carl Hinds won, 7 -6, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for visiting Saddleback (13-1, 7-0).

Rancho Santiago 5, Riverside 4--Russ Segawa defeated Tim Roa, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, to clinch the match for visiting Rancho Santiago (8-4, 4-2).
