Local News in Brief : Fire Hydrant Hit by Driver Causes Flood

Share

A hit-and-run driver knocked over a fire hydrant in the Hollywood Hills early Friday, setting off a minor flood that washed away part of the slope, carried debris onto private property and forced a daylong closure of Mulholland Drive, authorities said.

Los Angeles Department of Water & Power workers managed to shut off the water about two hours after the 2:37 a.m. accident about 500 feet east of Palo Vista Drive. Muck and debris clogged driveways of two homes just below Mulholland in the 2700 block of La Cuesta Drive.

While police kept motorists off Mulholland between Outpost Drive and Nichols Canyon Road, a 10-member city Public Works Department crew extended the north shoulder of Mulholland by 5 feet and laid down asphalt so that traffic could use the road by evening.
