Point Loma Nazarene Defeats Biola to Give Land His 500th Career Coaching Victory

Point Loma Nazarene Coach Caroll Land picked up his 500th career college victory as the Crusaders defeated Biola, 4-3.

Tony Nobinsky doubled in the third to drive in two runs, and Rich Johnson struck out 12 for the Crusaders (15-15) in La Mirada.

Biola (11-14-2) picked up 12 hits but stranded 14 base runners.

Land first coached the team as a senior while attending Point Loma. He has been the PLNC’s only coach in the program’s 29 years.

San Diego State split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with Wyoming, winning the second game, 6-5, in 10 innings after losing the first, 4-3.

Jeff Barry’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th won the second game for the Aztecs. Dave Riddle (3-0) was the winner. SDSU is 18-13, 3-3 in the WAC. Wyoming is 15-8, 4-2.

Wyoming’s Kevin Van Wormer hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to win the first game.

Rob Brown (3-2) was charged with the loss but pitched his sixth complete game in seven starts. SDSU’s Brian Lutes went two for two, with two RBIs and one run scored.

Pepperdine swept the University of San Diego, 14-8 and 8-1, in a nonconference doubleheader at Cunningham Stadium.

USD led the first game, 6-3, until Pepperdine broke it open with a four-run fourth inning. USD walked 11 in the loss.

Pepperdine (20-12-1) spread the scoring out in the second game, scoring in five of the seven innings. The Toreros dropped to 15-14-1.

UC San Diego split a doubleheader with The Masters College in Newhall. The Masters won the first game, 5-4, then UCSD came back to win, 5-4.

In the Tritons’ victory, Erik Judson was two for four with two RBIs, Chris Murphy was three for four and Anthony Sanchez was two for four. J.J. Fisher (3-1) was the winner for UCSD (15-11).

In the first game, Judson was two for three with one RBI, Murphy was two for three and Jim Martinez was two for three for the Tritons. Jeff Cole hit a home run for The Masters College (12-20-1). Cole (5-2) was also the winner.

HOCKEY

The San Diego Surf clinched the Pacific Southwest Hockey League championship with an 11-5 victory over the Burbank Jets at the San Diego Ice Arena.

The victory gave the Surf a sweep of the best-of-three series and finished their undefeated season at 22-0-1.

Team captain Jerry Azato scored three goals, giving him five for the series, to lead the Surf. Playing assistant coach M.F. Schurman and Peter Stensgard each scored twice.

SOFTBALL

U.S. International lost its 12th and 13th consecutive games by identical 2-0 scores in a doubleheader against visiting Nebraska (13-7).

In the second game, the Gulls (12-20-1) managed seven hits but left eight runners stranded. Michelle Hagen went two for two in Game 2.

TRACK AND FIELD

The San Diego State men and women both won the team competition at the SDSU Spring Festival with 86 and 97 points, while the Point Loma Nazarene College men were second (70) and the women third (43).

UC San Diego and San Diego Mesa College were among the six colleges that participated in the meet.

Three of Point Loma’s double winners picked up one victory in the 400 relay: John Toro, who also won the 100 meters, Kwame Moore, 110-meter hurdles, and Peter Johansson, the 400 meters. Tommy Anderberg won the discus and javelin.

Karen Nilson of SDSU was the lone three-event winner in the women’s competition. She won the 100 and 200-meter and ran a leg of the 400-meter relay. Teammate Michele Stevens was also on the winning relay team and won the 100-meter hurdles.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego lost to No. 11 University of Southern California, 5-2, in its final match of the Blue/Grey National Collegiate Tennis tournament in Montgomery, Ala. USD’s two victories came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Dan Mattera defeated Murphy Jensen, 7-6, 6-1, then Tim Bubnack defeated Paul Brandt, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. USD, ranked 21st, is 19-5, and USC is 13-8.
