Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State said he is prepared to challenge the National Football League in court, if necessary, in his efforts to turn pro this year.

Citing his school’s recent probation and a desire to help his family financially, Sanders notified the NFL Thursday that he wants to become eligible for this year’s draft. His petition sets up a potential test of the league’s restrictions against drafting underclassmen.

Sanders, who has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, has signed contracts with sports agents David Ware of Atlanta and Lamont Smith of Denver. Oklahoma State has declared Sanders ineligible to compete next season.
