Former Texas A&M; football player George Smith reversed his field again, denying a published report that he was offered $30,000 to recant charges he was paid “hush money” for his silence about National Collegiate Athletic Assn. rules violations at the university, the Bryan (Tex.) Eagle reported.
The newspaper said that in a Saturday night telephone interview from his home in Atlanta, Smith denied a report in Saturday’s editions of the Dallas Morning News in which he was quoted as saying he was offered about $30,000 by a university official to recant earlier charges that former A&M; coach Jackie Sherrill broke NCAA rules.
