College Roundup : Gallego Lifts UC Irvine to 6-5 Victory Over USIU in 10

Chris Gallego’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave UC Irvine a 6-5 victory over United States International University Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game at Irvine.

Gallego’s single scored Courtney Davis from second base with the winning run with two outs.

USIU scored a run in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Rick Paige’s two-out single to center scored Geoff Martinez to tie the score, 6-6.

Mike Goodcase was two for four with two RBIs and Osmar DeChavez was three for four for Irvine (11-17-1).

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Southern California College 11, Cal Lutheran 5--Kendall Kasper had three hits and six RBIs and Joe Aversa had three hits and four RBIs for the Vanguards (19-9, 8-2) at Southern California College. The Vanguards trailed, 5-3, after four innings, but took a 7-5 lead after Kasper hit a grand slam in the fifth. Aversa had a two-run homer in the third.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 5-1, Pacific 1-0--Anjie Bryant won both games of the doubleheader as the fifth-ranked Titans improved to 30-8 overall and 14-4 in the Big West Conference. Bryant (16-3) allowed a run on four hits in the first game. In the second game, she allowed one hit in four innings in relief of Ann Van Dortrecht. Fullerton scored the winning run in the seventh inning when Jill Matyuch singled to drive in Mich DeBree.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, University of San Diego 1--Mark Kaplan defeated David Stewart, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, as the Anteaters (16-5) won five of six singles matches at Irvine.
