Hart Rolls Along Despite Loss of Edwards

Share

Despite the fact that All-Southern Section selection Jason Edwards has yet to pitch, Hart High (11-1) is ranked fourth in the nation by USA Today, thanks in part to the contributions of two underclassmen. Junior left-hander Andrew Lorraine is 4-0 with a 1.06 earned-run average and sophomore right-hander Keith Halcovich is 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA. The staff ERA is 1.78.

Edwards, a Times All-Valley pick last season with an 11-0 record, has been relegated to the role of designated-hitter this season because of an inflamed rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Hitting: Hart has seven players batting over .300, the team batting average is .349 and the team on-base percentage is .449. Catcher Casey Burrill, who has orally commited to USC, is batting .560 with three home runs and three doubles. Lance Migita, who has a team-high eight doubles, is hitting .467. David Toledo is batting .432 and Robby Davis is at .421.

Streaks: Chatsworth (9-2) has won 21 consecutive West Valley League baseball games since a 4-1 loss to Canoga Park in 1987. With a two-game sweep of Taft last week, Chatsworth has won 25 games in a row over the Toreadors, a streak that began in 1981.

Stolen bases: Darrell Davis of Saugus set a school record last week with his 43rd career stolen base and has 14 of the team’s 35 steals. Ironically, the Centurions have been caught stealing only three times all season--and Davis was the man each time.

San Fernando’s Jess Romero has seven stolen bases in eight attempts and Pat Bryant of Cleveland has six steals in seven tries. . . . Westlake’s Tim Falsken has 13 stolen bases, one shy of the single-season school record.

Pitching: Westlake pitchers Mike Eby, John Brookman and Scott Lerner have walked only 18 batters in 74 1/3 innings.

Crespi’s Pat Bennett, after pitching 30 1/3 innings with an 0.00 ERA, surrendered his first earned run in a 12-11 loss to El Segundo on Saturday.
