College Roundup : Morales and Gillette Lead UCI Track
Mike Morales and Ryan Gillette each won two events to help the UC Irvine track and field team take a three-way meet at Irvine Saturday.
The Anteaters finished with 103 points, Utah State had 51 and Cal State Hayward 47.
Morales, a qualifier for the NCAA championships in Provo, Utah, won the hammer (197-0) and shotput (53-10 1/4). Gillette won the high jump at 6-11 and the triple jump at 47-3 3/4.
Irvine’s Marc Goulet won the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.47 and anchored the 4 x 400 meter relay team that won at 3:19.77.
In nonconference women’s track and field:
Minnesota 55, Arizona 49, Nevada Las Vegas 46, UC Irvine 35--Minnesota won four events to take the championship. UC Irvine’s Beth McGrann won the 5,000 meters with a seasonal best time 16:38.2. The Anteaters’ only other victory was the mile relay with a time of 3:52.3.
In Big West men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 6, Fresno State 0--Mark Kaplan, ranked 14th in the nation, won his 20th consecutive match, defeating Marcos Garzo, 6-3, 7-5, to improve his season record to 26-5. Fifth-ranked Irvine improved to 18-6 overall and 4-0 in the Big West Conference. Fresno State is 18-7 and 2-3.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tennis:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 6, Chapman 3--No. 1 singles player Tim Fresenius defeated Olivier Amerlinck, 6-4, 6-3, to help lead the Mustangs. Chapman dropped to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA.
