A Stay Is Issued in Stein Case
Trainer Roger Stein Tuesday was granted a stay of the six-month suspension and $2,000 fine that had been imposed upon him by the California Horse Racing Board after one of his horses tested positive for cocaine after a race at Santa Anita.
After hearing arguments from attorneys representing Stein and the CHRB, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kurt Lewin granted the stay pending a hearing June 22.
“Essentially, the issue that’s going to come up (in the June hearing) is, was this a positive test based on the scientific evidence?” asked Russ Iungerich, Stein’s attorney. “Does the scientific evidence show there really was cocaine that went through the horse, or was it some sort of environmental contamination of water, test tubes, other things? That’s going to be the central issue.”
