Prep Baseball Roundup : Kennedy’s Hansell Is Perfect Against Garden Grove

Greg Hansell pitched a perfect game as Kennedy High School defeated Garden Grove, 4-0, Wednesday in Garden Grove League baseball game at Kennedy.

Hansell (6-1) struck out eight and had only one ball hit into the outfield.

Garden Grove had only one batter come close to getting on base. Mike Bickford led off the seventh inning with a ground ball down the first-base line. However, Kennedy first baseman Pete Montera made a diving stop and flipped the ball to Hansell, who was covering first base, for the out.

Kennedy (13-4 overall, 4-1 in league play) scored on an error in the fourth for a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Irish then scored three in the fifth, two on a single by Ernie Franco, who has 27 runs batted in this season.

Montera had two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth.

In other Garden Grove League games:

La Quinta 3, Los Amigos 2--Jason Parsons, La Quinta’s usual starting catcher, made his first start as a pitcher this season and came away with the win at home. Parsons hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his fifth home run of the season. Joe Russo, who was two for three, scored for La Quinta (14-3-1, 4-1) in the fourth inning on an error.

Santiago 3, Bolsa Grande 1--Winning pitcher Sean McCorry allowed just one run despite walking six, allowing five hits and having the Santiago defense commit six errors. McCorry (3-3), who had to work out of bases-loaded situations in three innings, helped himself by picking off three runners. David Smith was two for two with a solo home run for Santiago (5-8-1, 2-3).

In the Angelus League:

Bishop Montgomery 3, Servite 2 (9 innings)--With the score tied at 1-1 after seven innings, Bishop Montgomery (11-4, 2-3) scored two in the top of the ninth to take a 3-1 lead. Servite (11-4, 2-3) rallied for a run in the bottom of the inning when Ed Crippin, who had been hit by a pitch, scored on Rob Walker’s single.

Mater Dei 5, Bishop Amat 4--Jim Kelly and Rob Ickes each had two RBIs for Mater Dei (13-3, 4-1) at Bishop Montgomery. Jeff Ciccarella also had an RBI for the Monarchs.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 9, Katella 3--Winning pitcher Todd Gragnano, who scattered six hits, went three for four with two RBIs to lead Los Alamitos (9-8, 4-2) at Boysen Park in Anaheim. Los Alamitos’ Doug Kieck and Brian Havens each went three for four. The win put Los Alamitos in a three-way tie for first with El Dorado and Katella (10-6, 4-2).

El Dorado 11, Loara 1--Matt Luke had three hits and two RBIs and Phil Nevin had two hits, including a three-run homer, for the Golden Hawks (12-5, 4-2) at El Dorado. Pete Janicki (2-1) scattered eight hits and struck out five for the victory.

Esperanza 14, Cypress 1--Dan Redington had a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored for Esperanza (7-4-2, 1-4-1) at Cypress. Jason Perez had three RBIs and Keith McDonald two for Esperanza. Roger Weems (1-2) pitched a four-hitter for the victory.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 11, Magnolia 1--Jose Gonzalez had three hits and two RBIs for Anaheim (9-8, 5-1) at Magnolia. John Barber and Danny Castro each had three hits and a RBI. Castro (2-0) also pitched a three-hitter for the victory.

Valencia 7, Brea-Olinda 6--Keef Leasure’s RBI single capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh for the Tigers (9-3, 4-2) at Valencia. Rick Gress had two hits and three RBIs for Valencia.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 9, Saddleback 6--Robert Nye, Mark Hartley and Len Herman each had two RBIs for Estancia (11-5, 4-2) at Saddleback.

Tustin 7, Newport Harbor 0--Monte Jones (6-0) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, for Tustin (10-6, 5-1) at Newport Harbor. Jones also had two hits and two RBIs.

University 13, Corona del Mar 9--Trent McGinn had three hits and five RBIs and Dave Dieter had a home run and two RBIs for University (6-9-1, 3-3) at Corona del Mar.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 9, Mission Viejo 6--Doug Bame had two hits, including a grand slam, for the Cougars (11-5, 4-2) at Capistrano Valley. Bame’s grand slam in the fourth gave the Cougars a 7-3 lead. David Gullien and Dan Zamora each had two hits for Capistrano Valley. Troy Kopp had a two-run homer for Mission Viejo (11-4, 4-2).

El Toro 8, Dana Hills 3--Chris Sauritch went four for four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead El Toro at home. Sean Drinkwater was three for four for El Toro (12-5, 4-2) with three RBIs and a run scored. Winning pitcher Rob Johnson pitched a six-hitter.

San Clemente 5, Irvine 4--Trailing, 4-2, in the bottom of the sixth, San Clemente (1-5) rallied for three runs on two home runs to win at home. Rick Brail hit a two-run homer with no outs, and Mike Murphy followed that with a solo home run.
