College Roundup : Santa Barbara Rolls Over Pierce in Tennis

Only Mark Nielsen prevented Pierce College from being swept clean on its home court Thursday as Santa Barbara shocked the Brahmas, 8-1, in a Western State Conference men’s tennis match.

Nielsen, Pierce’s No. 2 singles player, defeated Sean Angel, 6-4, 7-6, for the Brahmas’ only victory. Sang Kim, Pierce’s No. 1 singles player, was defeated by Billy Miller, 6-2, 6-2.

For Santa Barbara, Dayne Gingrich defeated Mason Harris, 6-4, 6-4; Lance Kronberg defeated Kameron Slaten, 7-5, 6-1; Fred Lageman defeated Vince Brandt, 6-2, 6-1; and Raphael Wolfe defeated Justin Sherring 7-5, 6-1 in singles play.

Santa Barbara recorded three doubles victories as Miller and Angel defeated Kim and Nielsen, 6-2, 6-2; Gingrich and Kronberg defeated Slaten and Brandt, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1; and Lageman and Wolfe defeated Sherring and Jeff Walendy, 6-4, 6-2

Pierce, which lost only its fifth conference tennis match in 13 seasons, dropped to 11-2 in conference play.

In other tennis action:

Cal Lutheran 9, Westmont 0--Cal Lutheran, ranked 20th nationally in the NAIA, swept six singles and three doubles matches in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

Paavo Salmi defeated John Tormey, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; Mike Gennette defeated Rich Mahlamgu, 6-3, 7-5; Tony Cohen defeated Chad Felberg, 6-4, 6-2; Matt Simpson defeated Greg Schultz, 6-1, 6-4; Brian Turner defeated Chris Ellwood, 6-4, 6-1; and Truls Midtbo defeated Steve Hirons, 6-2, 6-0, in singles play.

In doubles, Salmi and Gennette defeated Tormey and Mahlamgu, 6-3, 6-2; Turner and Simpson defeated Felberg and Schultz, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2; and Cohen and George Kovacs defeated Ellwood and Marhcus Nelson, 6-1, 6-1.

Cal Lutherhan is 12-9, 5-0 in conference play. Westmont is 7-13, 3-4.

BASEBALL

Mission 9, Los Angeles City College 8--Chris Romo had a two-run single and Shawn Fontenot had a run-scoring single to highlight a six-run seventh inning for Mission (8-17, 6-7) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at L. A. City College.

Jose Garcia (6-5), from Marshall High, pitched a complete game, walking four and striking out four.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 13-7, Loyola Marymount 0-2--The Lady Matadors coasted in the first game and broke open the second game with a five-run sixth inning to sweep a nonconference doubleheader at Loyola Marymount.

Freshman Christy Alves (4-4) and senior Debbie Dickmann combined on a one-hitter and Pam Smith was four for five with two doubles and five RBIs in the first game. Jamie Berkman added four hits and two RBIs for CSUN.

Alves also started the second game, but yielded to fellow freshman Heather Lindstom (12-4), who earned the win. With the score tied, 2-2, in the sixth, Northridge (39-13) staged the game-winning rally. Erin McGuire belted a three-run double in the surge.

Lisa Erickson was two for three. Krista Miller was two for five in her first start since replacing third baseman Lisa Hall, who quit the team earlier this week.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 7-5, Cal Lutheran 1-1--Lisa Johnson and Michelle Sorci each recorded complete-game victories for Cal Poly SLO in a nonconference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Johnson (8-1) pitched a four-hitter, striking out six and walking one to complement the Lady Mustangs’ 16-hit attack. Sorci scattered six hits, struck out three and walked two. Deandra Pilkington was a combined four for seven.
