Women’s Tennis Tournament : Graf, Sabatini Reach Final
Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany and No. 3 Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina reached today’s final of the $300,000 Amelia Island tennis tournament, each with 6-3, 6-2 victories Saturday.
Graf won her 31st consecutive match by defeating sixth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, and Sabatini beat second-seeded Martina Navratilova.
Navratilova broke Sabatini’s service in the first game of the match, with the Argentine winning only one point. But Sabatini broke back right away and broke again in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead in the first set.
In the second set, Sabatini broke Navratilova’s serve twice for a 4-0 advantage. Navratilova fought back to trail, 4-2, but her serve was broken again in the seventh game, before Sabatini served out the match.
