Amy Shaw of Capistrano Valley High School has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Texas in the fall.

Shaw, who holds the American long-course record in the 200-meter breaststroke (2 minutes 29.78 seconds), said she chose Texas for its swimming program. She had also been considering the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee.

“I just feel it’s the best swim program in the nation,” Shaw said.

Shaw set the record in July of 1987 at the U.S. Swimming Long Course National Championships in Clovis, Calif. She also competed for the United States in the Goodwill Games in 1986.
