IN BRIEF : 2 Americans Out of Japan Open

Seeded Americans Dan Goldie and Jay Berger were upset in the first round of the $752,500 Japan Open Championships today.

Goldie, the 10th seed from McLean, Va., fell to unranked Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Berger, seeded No. 12 out of Plantation, Fla., lost to Australian Broderick Dyke 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) on the hard courts of the Ariake Colosseum.

Goldie is ranked 27th in the world and Pugh is 70th. Berger’s world rating is 35th, and Dyke’s is 164th.

“I returned service pretty well after the second set,” Pugh said.

Anders Jarryd of Sweden, the 11th seed, needed just 55 minutes to beat Japan’s Shigeru Ohta 6-2, 6-1.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, second-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, third-seeded American John McEnroe--the defending champion--and other seeded players drew a bye in the first round.

First prize is worth $122,250 and second prize $61,125.
