Today at the AFI Festival

Following are capsule reviews of today’s screenings in the American Film Institute Los Angeles International Film Festival at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza Cinemas: ‘The Possessed’

France, 1988, 116 minutes 9:00 p.m. Gaumont inexplicably provided AFI/LA FilmFest a wretched English-dubbed version of director Andrzej Wajda and writer Jean-Claude Carriere’s film of the Dostoevsky novel for its earlier press screening, but be assured that the film screening tonight is another print, the original French language version with fine English subtitles. In this terse, passionate, darkly brilliant film, Wajda perceives in Dostoevsky’s fevered group of young provincial revolutionaries, circa 1870, a chilling prefiguring of Stalinism in all its brutality and paranoia. The large cast is headed by Jerzy Radziwilowicz (Wajda’s “Man of Marble”). RECOMMENDED.
