Program to Curb Truck Traffic OKd
A voluntary program to reduce rush-hour truck traffic on the Harbor Freeway during a four-year widening and busway construction project was approved Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council.
The program, modeled after one currently being used during the widening of the Ventura Freeway in the San Fernando Valley, will encourage businesses and trucking companies to schedule deliveries outside of rush hours by offering special permits for extended late-night shipping and receiving.
The program will begin in June and be targeted at low-noise businesses in an area between the Santa Monica and San Diego freeways and Central and Western avenues. Officials hope for results similar to those seen on the Ventura Freeway, where peak-hour truck traffic has been reduced by 15%.
