NHL Playoffs Roundup : Penguins Beat Flyers in Overtime, 4-3

Phil Bourque is beginning to emerge from the shadow of his brother, Ray, who is one of the great defensemen in hockey.

Phil, also a defenseman, failed four times to stick with the Pittsburgh Penguins until this season but he had his big moment Friday night at Philadelphia.

Bourque fired in a shot from the slot at 12:08 of overtime to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Flyers and a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven Stanley Cup playoff series.

Rob Brown made the pass from the left side along the boards to Bourque, who beat goalie Ron Hextall for his fourth playoff goal.

As he gets used to playoff hockey, Mario Lemieux starts playing better. He scored his sixth playoff goal in the first period to get the Penguins the first of three leads.

The Flyers, who never led, caught up for the last time on Dave Poulin’s goal at 2:51 of the third period. From then until Bourque ended it, goalies Tom Barrasso and Hextall were in charge.

Montreal 5, Boston 4--It was a little tougher at Boston, but the Canadiens still won their seventh consecutive playoff game.

Russ Courtnall scored with just 6:08 remaining in regulation to give the Canadiens their third win in a row over the Bruins, after they blew the Hartford Whalers out in four games.

The Canadiens, 10-0-1 against the Bruins this season after losing to them in the playoffs last year, can wrap it up with a win at Boston Sunday.

Boston fell behind, 3-0, and didn’t score until there were six minutes left in the second period. They pulled even at 3:13 of the third period, fell behind again and caught up on Cam Neeley’s goal three minutes before Courtnall won it.
