College Roundup : Titans Lose to San Jose State on Ninth-Inning Error

Cal State Fullerton shortstop Mate Borgogno booted a grounder by Eric Booker, then threw it away with two outs in the ninth inning to allow Andy Coan to score the eventual winning run in San Jose State’s 7-6 victory in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Titan Field.

Bill Bentley (2-0) picked up the victory in relief. Paul Johnson (3-6) took the loss, pitching a complete game.

First baseman Rex Peters led the Fullerton offense with three hits in three at-bats, including a solo homer in the first inning and a game-tying double in the eighth.

The victory improved San Jose State’s record to 46-9 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Fullerton dropped to 25-18, 5-5. The teams play at Titan Field tonight at 7 and Sunday at 1 p.m.

In another Big West Conference game:

UNLV 2, UC Irvine 1--Sophomore left-hander Donovan Osborne struck out six and held UC Irvine (15-27-1, 1-9) to five hits to pace visiting Nevada Las Vegas (30-11, 6-4). Designated hitter Kevin Lofthus was hitless in three at-bats for UNLV to end his 34-game hitting streak.

The Anteaters put on the tying run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning when shortstop Al Rodriguez singled, but catcher Chuck Der Manouel threw him out on an attempted steal. UC Irvine designated hitter Fred Combs then struck out to end the game. Junior right-hander Ken Whitworth (4-6) went the distance and took the loss. The Anteaters have scored a total of four runs in Whitworth’s last three outings.

Chapman 6, USIU 4--Winning pitcher David Bird (8-6) went the distance, giving up eight hits and four walks and striking out nine. Mike Grahovac’s double in the eighth drove in two runs to give host Chapman (21-12) a 4-3 lead, which they never relinquished. Greg Decker was two for two with an RBI.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Cal Poly Pomona 5, Chapman 4--Cal Poly Pomona’s fourth, fifth and sixth singles players, and the top two doubles teams won their matches at Pomona. The singles winners for Cal Poly Pomona (15-9, 4-4) were No. 4 player Jason Excell, No. 5 Paun Uyen and No. 6 Bill Bush. Chapman (12-10, 6-3) entered the match ranked fourth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn., and Cal Poly Pomona was ranked 19th.
