IN BRIEF : Honorary Degree Delights Tyson

Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson said today he considers receiving an honorary doctorate from Central State University the high point of his success.

Central State University awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters to Tyson, a high school dropout, during commencement ceremonies today.

Speaking at a news conference at the university in west-central Ohio, Tyson said he also has an honorary degree from Grambling University.

“There’s no greater pleasure in the world than to be accepted by your own people,” Tyson said, referring to the predominantly black Central State and Grambling. Tyson said overcoming adversity is what America is all about.

The university said it was honoring Tyson for his positive influence on young people. “Mike demonstrates that hard work, determination and perseverance can enable one to overcome any obstacles,” said university President Arthur Thomas.
