High School Baseball : Pelote Complements Delahoya’s 1-Hitter With 7 RBIs

Javier Delahoya pitched a one-hitter and Steve Pelote had three hits and drove in seven runs as Grant High walloped host Reseda, 13-1, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference baseball game Tuesday.

Grant (11-4 overall, 8-3 in league play) scored four runs off Reseda starter Rod Stickland in the top of the first and was never threatened.

Pelote, a junior, keyed a six-run fifth inning with a two-out grand slam.

Delahoya, who struck out five and walked four in recording his sixth complete game, had two hits--including a triple--and drove in a run.

In other Valley Pac-8 games:

Birmingham 10, Poly 4--David Grisar pitched a five-hitter as Birmingham knocked Poly out of a first-place tie with Sylmar in the East Valley League.

Birmingham (5-10, 3-8) scored three times in the second on a two-run triple by Jack Moussa and a sacrifice fly by Diego Arcos. Josh Brown keyed a four-run seventh with a bases-loaded double.

Eddie Chavez had two doubles and two runs batted in for Poly (12-6, 8-3).

North Hollywood 17, Van Nuys 9--Mike Lewis tripled home three runs and added two doubles and Russell Greene scored five times for North Hollywood, which collected 16 hits.

NORTHWEST VALLEY CONFERENCE

Kennedy 13, Canoga Park 3--Gino Tagliaferri hit his seventh and eighth home runs and drove in seven runs to lead Kennedy (15-5, 9-2). He finished with three hits, scored three runs and increased his RBI total to 27.

Garret Anderson, who missed last week because of strep throat, added two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. James Campbell had three hits and Pat DeBoer added two.

El Camino Real 9, Cleveland 3--Junior Ryan McGuire pitched a two-hitter as host El Camino Real won its third consecutive game. McGuire (2-1), who struck out seven, also had seven walks and forced in all three of Cleveland’s runs with walks.

Jason Cohen had three hits and two RBIs for El Camino Real (4-7).

NORTHERN CONFERENCE

Verdugo Hills 3, Belmont 1--Masaaki Yamashita (5-3) struck out 13 and allowed only three hits for host Verdugo Hills (9-9, 5-3).

DEL REY LEAGUE

Loyola 5, Crespi 4--John Dempsey (0-1) surrendered an RBI single with one out in the 10th as Crespi remained winless in league play.

The Celts (8-14-1, 0-7-1), who have lost their past four league games by a total of five runs, stranded 12 baserunners.

St. Francis 3, St. John Bosco 0--Right-handers Mitch Bowen and Mark Loretta combined to pitch a two-hitter at Brookside Field in Pasadena.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Crescenta Valley 4, Arcadia 2--Junior right-hander Shane Cowsill (2-5) pitched a three-hitter, struck out six, walked two and had two doubles in an upset of first-place Arcadia (8-2) at Stengel Field in Glendale.

FOOTHILL LEAGUE

Hart 8, Burbank 3--Sophomore Keith Halcovich pitched a five-hitter, struck out five and walked only one at Burbank.

Halcovich, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, allowed three unearned runs to lower his earned-run average to 1.05.

Darin Tsukashima had two hits and stole four bases for Hart.

Alhambra 3, Burroughs 2--John Risch’s infield single scored Jesus Morales with the winning run in the sixth inning at Alhambra.

FRONTIER LEAGUE

Agoura 17, Santa Paula 2--Dave Aronowitz hit a home run and doubled and Brian Smith had three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs as the visiting Chargers collected 21 hits of four Santa Paula pitchers.

Calabasas 7, Santa Ynez 6--Dave Kalman and Eric Rothman hit run-scoring doubles to key a five-run Calabasas rally with two out in the fourth at Santa Ynez.

ALPHA LEAGUE

Montclair Prep 6, L.A. Baptist 5--Keyaan Cook knocked in the winning run in the fifth with a home run, his second of the game, as the host Mounties rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit to win their sixth in a row. Cook, who leads the Mounties with seven home runs, was three for three with five RBIs.

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE

Oak Park 2, Bishop Diego 1--Jason Kane scored the winning run in the fifth on a wild pitch and Jeff Gibbons struck out eight in pitching a complete game for the visiting Eagles.

DELPHIC LEAGUE

Faith Baptist 14, Buckley 12--Wes Doll hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh ining to break a 12-12 tie at Faith Baptist.

WESTSIDE LEAGUE

Highland Hall 8, Grace Community 3--Robert Ramirez (9-3) threw an eight-hitter, struck out eight and walked two as the Hawks won their 21st consecutive league game, placing them eighth on the all-time Southern Section list.
