Raiders Change Sports to Raise Money to Honor Slain Teacher

The Los Angeles Raiders football team will play a basketball game tonight against a team of sportscasters and Grant High School students--and at least one woman--to raise money to honor the memory of Hal Arthur, the Grant teacher who shot to death last month.

Tickets to the 7 p.m. game in the school gym cost $5. The money will probably be used to provide college scholarships to Grant graduates, said Ruth Shaw, assistant principal.

The gym, which seats “a little more than 1,000,” is expected to sell out, she said.

The Raiders volunteered for the game after they heard about Arthur’s death, said Ed Troutner, district manager at Great American First Savings Bank in North Hollywood, which has been helping arrange Raider basketball appearances for charity for six years.

Arthur was ambushed in his driveway March 24, the day following a Raiders charity game at Grant to raise money for a former student needing money for a bone-marrow transplant.

The killer escaped. Police have said they have no suspects and have found no motive.

The Raiders, including Rod Martin, Mike Haynes and Jerry Robinson, will play “The Media Blitz,” made up of sportscasters and sports writers, including Scott Ostler of the Los Angeles Times, Ted Green of ESPN, Fred Wallin of KABC radio and Geoff Nathanson of the Prime Ticket cable TV network.

The media team will also include six players from the Grant boy’s team and Ann Meyers, a four-year all-American player at UCLA.
