St. Bernard 14, Verbum Dei 4--Dan Melendez continued his assault on the CIF-Southern Section career home run record by smacking two homers and driving in six runs to lead the Vikings to a Camino Real League triumph at St. Bernard.

The Pepperdine-bound senior has 30 career home runs, two behind the CIF record of 32 set by Simi Valley’s Scott Sharts in 1986-88.

Melendez hit two-run homers in the fourth and sixth innings, giving him 11 on the season and six in the last four games. He went four for four to raise his average to .612 (30 for 49).

John Coleman went two for four and stole two bases for St. Bernard, which improved to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the Camino Real League. The Vikings are ranked fourth in the Southern Section 2-A Division.

Mary Star 25, Pater Noster 3--The Stars’ 11th consecutive win turned into a laugher as they collected 25 hits in a Santa Fe League game at Fromhold Field in San Pedro.

Richard Negrete (four for six, two doubles, triple), Phil Trivison (three for three, home run) and Sean Marron (two for four) each drove in three runs as Mary Star improved its league-leading record to 6-0 and overall mark to 14-5.

Right-hander Willie Sanchez (1-1) struck out 10 in four innings to earn the victory. George Pisano, Steve Barker and Mark Ponce De Leon each drove in two runs.

Redondo 16, Morningside 9--Robbie Zeller’s two-run triple and Keith Sedgwick’s two-run double highlighted a five-run seventh inning for the Sea Hawks in an Ocean League slugfest at Morningside.

Redondo (11-10 overall, 6-3 in league play) needed a big finish to break open an 11-9 game. Sedgwick, the No. 9 hitter, and Mike Houck each had three hits in three at-bars and four RBIs. Brian Davison went two for four with three runs scored.

Morningside, in last place at 0-9, had 12 hits and benefitted from seven walks.
