College Baseball Roundup : Fullerton Pounds Irvine Pitching; Series Final Today

Cal State Fullerton pounded out 18 hits in an 11-5 victory over UC Irvine in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Irvine.

The Titans (28-20 overall, 8-6 in the conference) reached starter and loser Rob Johnson for 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 innings.

Designated hitter Dave Staton led the attack, going four for five with two doubles and four RBIs. Rex Peters went four for four with two doubles and three runs scored.

Huck Flener improved his record to 9-0 with the victory, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits. He walked four and struck out two.

Ed Luna, who went two for five with three RBIs for the Anteaters (17-30-1, 3-11), has now hit in 17 of 18 games.

The three-game series concludes today at 1 p.m. at UC Irvine. The Anteaters won the first game, 5-3, on Friday.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Westmont 4-2, Southern Cal College 2-7--Phil Bejarano allowed seven singles for a complete-game victory in the second game of a doubleheader as SCC earned a split against host Westmont, which remained in first place in the GSAC. Joe Aversa went three for four with a run and a stolen base to lead SCC. In the first game, Jeff Ludwig (8-3) pitched a complete game six-hitter to beat Jim Dedrick (5-4). Brian Ryan went two for two and stole two bases to spark Westmont, 28-14 overall and 16-6 in the conference; SCC is 25-19 and 13-7.
