THE PREPS : Roundup : Huntington Beach Gains Tennis Playoffs

In a playoff for third place in the Sunset League, Huntington Beach swept through its singles matches and beat Edison, 10-8, to clinch the final spot in the Southern Section playoffs.

No. 1 singles player Andy Stewart won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead host Huntington Beach (11-9, 6-5). Edison finishes at 5-6 in the league.

In Angelus League tennis:

Mater Dei 17, St. Paul 1--Jason Harnett and Adam Jarrett swept their doubles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for the Monarchs (16-1, 11-0) at Mater Dei.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 11 1/3, Los Alamitos 9 2/3--No. 2 doubles team of Son Pham and Otto Liao swept, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, to help lead host Cypress (12-5, 5-3). Los Alamitos is 5-3 in the league.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 18, Buena Park 0--Glenn Henderson swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for the Lancers (17-1, 9-0) at Sunny Hills.

In the Orange League:

Western 15, Savanna 3--Ed Peregrino swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, to help Western improve to 14-4 overall and 10-3 in the league. Savanna is 8-5 in the Orange League.

Valencia 17, Brea 1--Jason Ba and Ron Lacuata won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, for visiting Valencia (14-4 overall, 13-0 in league play).

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Trabuco Hills 196, Woodbridge 230--John Fischer shot a one-over par 37 as Trabuco Hills (14-4, 9-1) clinched the league title with a victory at Coto de Caza.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills had three of the top four finishers in individual competition at Green River Country Club. The top four golfers will advance to the Southern Section individual tournament on May 22 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs. Mike Bestor of Dana Hills shot his second 76 of the two-day tournament to take first in the league for the second straight year. Scott Richardson, a freshman from Dana Hills, shot an even par 72 to earn medalist honors Tuesday and second place overall. Greg Reynolds of El Toro took third place, winning a three-way playoff over Justin Boatman and Rob Haslam. Boatman of Dana Hills then beat out Haslam of El Toro on the second playoff hole to clinch the final tournament spot. Dana Hills (15-2, 9-1) tied with El Toro for first place during the regular season.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 389, Marina 400 (18 holes)--Trent Fenzl shot a six-over par 76 for Huntington Beach (14-4, 8-1) at Meadowlark golf course. Matt Aldan shot a 75 for Marina.

Edison 299, Fountain Valley 330--Jason Vanderplas shot a 55 and Brandon Loomis shot a 56 to help lead Edison (11-6, 7-2). Fountain Valley is 1-8 in the league.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 0--Paul Price had 10 kills and five blocks as La Quinta (11-3, 11-0) swept, 15-9, 15-13, 15-7, to clinch the league title at La Quinta. Chris Kim had seven kills and seven blocks for the Aztecs.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 3, Estancia 0--Matt Cwiertnia had seven aces and eight kills to lead host Corona del Mar (11-2 overall and 9-0 in the league) to the 15-1, 15-13, 15-11 victory. Estancia drops to 6-7 and 4-5.

Newport Harbor 3, University 2--Chris Lee had 28 kills as Newport Harbor (8-5, 6-3) rallied to win, 8-15, 10-15, 15-5, 15-11, 15-6, at University.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 3, Capistrano Valley 2--Ritso Lindfors had 34 kills as Irvine (6-9, 6-3) won, 15-12, 15-10, 10-15, 13-15, 15-10, at Irvine

In the Sunset League:

Edison 3, Ocean View 1--Mike Diehl had 14 kills as Edison (13-2, 7-2), 15-17, 15-7, 15-12, 15-8, at Ocean View.

Marina 3, Fountain Valley 1--Tom Rosenbaun had 10 kills and seven blocks as Marina (11-4, 6-3) won, 15-11, 14-16, 15-10, 15-5.
