2 Men Injured in Fight at School in Newhall

Two young men were injured Sunday in a fight on the Newhall Elementary School campus that ended with the arrests of two people, police said.

The wounded men--one with minor injuries and the other with a moderate head injury--were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital after they were apparently beaten with baseball bats, said Sgt. Jim Curtis of the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station.

Curtis said gunshots were fired and a handgun was found near the scene, but no one was shot.

A juvenile and a young adult suspected of beating the two young men and firing the shots were in custody at the sheriff’s station, authorities said. Their names--and as those of the injured men--were not released.

The beatings occurred after a fight broke out between the suspects and five other young men at about 5:20 p.m., Curtis said. The men began arguing on a street corner near the school and they fought on the campus, Curtis said.

The reason the men were fighting had not been determined, Curtis said.
