San Diego State Might Play Texas El Paso in Hong Kong

San Diego State and Texas El Paso might play a Western Athletic Conference football game on Dec. 2 in Hong Kong, according to SDSU’s Rick Taylor, associate athletic director of marketing and sales.

The regular conference game is scheduled to be played Oct. 28 in El Paso. But according to plans being discussed, the Aztecs and the Miners would play the first college football game in Hong Kong.

The December date was agreed upon by SDSU, UTEP and organizers in Hong Kong. The trip will be financed entirely through sponsorship.

FOOTBALL

A brunch for former Vista High quarterback Sal Aunese, who has been diagnosed with inoperable stomach cancer, will be held Sunday at the Optimist Club of Vista from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Aunese was diagnosed with the disease about a month ago while at the University of Colorado, where he was the starting quarterback the past two years. In 1985, the high school All-American quarterback led Vista to a 13-0 record and the San Diego Section 3-A championship.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children and can be obtained at Vista High, Rancho Buena Vista High, Don Vincent Men’s Wear, Avalon Bay or the Oceanside Blade Tribune. Donations can be made to the Sal Aunese Trust Fund, The Optimist Club of Vista, P.O. Box 272, Vista, Ca. 92038.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Fourth-seeded UC San Diego won its quarterfinal and semifinal matches to advance to today’s finals of the NCAA Division III national championships in Claremont.

The Tritons defeated the University of the South, 8-1, in an early match, then upset No. 1-ranked Gustavus Adolphus, 5-4, in the semifinals.

Christine Behrens and Nancy Calhoun, in the top singles positions, won both their matches, then teamed to win both doubles matches.

UCSD meets third-ranked Kenyon College (Ohio) for the championship. The Tritons won national titles in 1985 and 1987.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Senior captain Danny Means received Most Valuable Player honors at the University of San Diego awards banquet.

Toreros Craig Cottrell and Kelvin Means also were presented top awards by Coach Hank Egan.

Cottrell was named Athlete of the Year, an award for academic and athletic excellence and Kelvin Means received a leadership award. Danny Means also won an athletic excellence award for commitment.
