Prep Roundup : Trabuco Hills Ties Up Softball Race

Trabuco Hills High School defeated Woodbridge, 5-3, Wednesday in the final softball game of the regular season, creating a three-way tie for first place in the Pacific Coast League.

Trabuco Hills, Woodbridge and Laguna Hills finished with 8-2 league records. Because the teams split their league meetings, there will be a coin toss today to determine the seedings for the playoffs.

Linda Lunceford (9-3) pitched a five-hitter for host Trabuco Hills (14-12 overall) and Christy Lunceford had three hits and two RBIs. Emily Leckey added two hits for Trabuco Hills.

In another Pacific Coast League softball game:

Laguna Hills 4, Orange 0--Margo Melendrez (15-5) pitched a two-hitter for visiting Laguna Hills (19-6, 8-2). Torin Lee hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Laguna Hills.

In Empire League baseball:

Cypress 6, Los Alamitos 2--Visiting Cypress rallied for six runs in the seventh inning. Kevin Smith hit a two-run home run to tie the score at 2-2. Darren Adlesh singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Ray Bridges squeezed in a run, John Gardikis doubled in another, and Jeff Russell had a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning. Bridges pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for Cypress (5-14-1, 3-10-1). Los Alamitos is 12-13 and 7-7.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 3, Brea-Olinda 1--Steve DeVinney pitched a five-hitter for host Savanna. He also singled in a run in a two-run third inning. Johnny Gooch’s triple drove in the other run.

Valencia 8, Magnolia 2--Ken Lorge allowed six hits and five walks in a complete-game effort. Rudy Lopez, Rick Gress and David Angel each hit fourth-inning home runs. Lopez’s was a grand slam to give Valencia (11-9, 6-8) a 6-0 lead. Magnolia is 7-17 and 4-10.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 8, St. Margaret’s 3--Brian James struck out 13 batters in the complete-game victory. He also hit a two-run home run and scored three runs. Liberty Christian is 19-2 and 9-0. St. Margaret’s is 7-10 and 5-4.

In the Century League tennis finals:

Dan Nguyen of Santa Ana Valley defeated Brad Mills of Canyon, 6-4, 6-4, and Naresh Parsons of Villa Park, 6-2, 6-3, to win the singles title. In doubles: Jason Stern and Jeff Gilstrap of Foothill defeated Eric Barloewen and Brian Stern of Foothill, 6-4, 7-5, and Phil Chen and David Schwarz of Foothill, 6-4, 6-2, to win the title.

In the Empire League tennis finals:

Jon Imel of Los Alamitos defeated Craig O’Neill of El Dorado, 6-3, 6-1, to win the singles title. John Hawley and Take Catsube of Esperanza defeated Larry Queen and Jeff Bailey of El Modena, 6-4, 6-3, to win the doubles title.

In the Garden Grove League tennis finals:

La Quinta won the singles and doubles championship. Cong Tran defeated Richard Montano of Los Amigos, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Peter Vu and Phu Truong beat Phillip Lim and Mike Kim of La Quinta, 6-1, 6-3.

In the Sea View League tennis finals:

Brett Hansen-Dent of Newport Harbor defeated Willie Dann of University, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, to win the singles title. Rob Atkin and Doug Schulein of Corona del Mar defeated Jamie Price and Steve Lappin of University, 7-5, 6-3, to win the doubles title.
