Two Girls Win Twice in Swimming Preliminaries

Michelle Butcher of Granite Hills High School and Allison Terry of University of San Diego High each won two events in Thursday’s San Diego Section girls’ swimming preliminaries at Mt. Carmel.

The top eight finishers in each event advanced to Saturday’s finals at Mt. Carmel.

Butcher won the 200-yard individual medley by almost four seconds in 2 minutes 8.65 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:55.18.

Terry won the 100 freestyle in 51.21 and the 200 free in 1:52.02. Both victories were by more than three seconds.

Torrey Pines’ Anne Serina won the 50 free (24.85) and placed third in the 100 free (54.80). Poway’s Maren Muter won the 100 butterfly by 1 1/2 seconds (58.81) and was third in the 50 free (25.33).

Rancho Buena Vista won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:48.81 over USDHS (3:50.22), and Poway won by 1.03 over Rancho Buena Vista in the 200 medley relay.

Section Badminton

Top-seeded Crawford will play No. 2 Hoover for the section badminton team championship today at the Federal Building (Balboa Park) at 2 p.m.

Crawford (15-0) defeated La Jolla, 13-4, and Hoover (14-1) defeated Serra, 11-6, to advance. La Jolla finished 10-5 and Serra 12-3.

Hoover has the No. 1-seeded boys’ player in Bin Lam, who is ranked second nationally. Crawford has the No. 2-seeded boys’ player in Tri Dam.

Section Boys’ Volleyball

Poway (13-2) defeated previously unbeaten and third-seeded Mira Mesa, 15-4, 15-5, in the quarterfinals of the section 3-A tournament. Chad Milling had 15 kills for the Titans, who advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals.

In a 2-A quarterfinal, top-seeded La Jolla (18-1) defeated El Cajon Valley, 15-5, 15-2, 15-4. Mira Mesa finished 14-1; El Cajon Valley 9-7.
