Memorial Honors Merchant Seamen

While the U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans World War II battle the Los Angeles Harbor Department over plans for its floating memorial, another group of merchant seamen will unveil a land-based monument on Monday, National Maritime Day.

The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial Committee, which last year erected a 20-foot-tall bronze statue honoring merchant seamen, will hold dedication ceremonies at John S. Gibson Park, adjacent to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, beginning at 10 a.m.

The 2,100-pound statue, which depicts two merchant seamen climbing a Jacob’s ladder after making a rescue at sea, is believed to be the first national memorial to merchant seamen in the U.S.
