The Preps : Southern Section Tennis Playoffs : Woodbridge Travels to El Centro for Round 2

The Woodbridge High School boys’ tennis team won its Southern Section 3-A first-round playoff match against Claremont, 16-2, Tuesday and, as its reward, gets to play in El Centro in the second round today.

Woodbridge (16-4 and top seeded in the 3-A) lost a coin flip Wednesday and as a result plays at Central Union (16-3) of El Centro.

The Warriors, led by No. 1 singles player Randy Ivey, swept all nine singles sets against Claremont.

Woodbridge advanced to the semifinals of the 3-A last year before losing to Los Alamitos.

In the 4-A, Foothill (12-8) plays host to top-seeded Santa Barbara (21-0). Third-seeded Corona del Mar (17-4) plays host to Fountain Valley (16-2), and fourth-seeded Newport Harbor (14-7) plays at Mater Dei (20-1).

In the 2-A, fourth-seeded Valencia (16-4) plays at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (14-4), and Western (16-4) plays host to San Luis Obispo (17-5).

In the 1-A, Santa Margarita (10-3) plays at Bellflower (14-5).

In 3-A boys’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 16, Alhambra 2--Laguna Beach (20-2), the No. 2 seed, swept host Alhambra (14-7) in the doubles matches and sophomore Jon Leach swept his matches, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, to improve his season record to 52-0. In his high school career, Leach is 117-1.

Sunny Hills 16, Arcadia 2--Glenn Henderson and Hans Erkelens swept their singles matches to lead the third-seeded Lancers (20-1) at Sunny Hills.
