A Remark to Player Is Haunting Watson

Tom Watson probably wishes he could change a few things in his career, but nothing more than his controversial accusation that Gary Player cheated in the 1983 Skins Game.

If Watson could do it over again, he would have kept the matter between himself and Player. Watson told Golf magazine that even when he accused Player of improving his lie by removing a growing leaf, he was upset that it became public.

Dave Anderson of the New York Times had overheard Watson tell Player he thought he had cheated. In retrospect, Watson said there was one thing he might have done differently.

“I would have walked farther away from Anderson,” he said.
