USD Advances in Tennis, Faces Irvine

The University of San Diego’s men’s tennis team eased through Friday’s first round of the NCAA team championships at Athens, Ga., upending Big 10 champion Minnesota, 5-1.

USD dominated the singles as Jose Luis Noriega, David Stewart, Mark Farren, Chris Toomey and Don Mattera all won.

The Toreros (25-6), ranked 16th nationally, play today against UC Irvine, seeded No. 4 in the tournament. USD lost, 5-1, to Irvine earlier in the year but played without No. 1 Noriega.

FOOTBALL

The San Diego State football team will not play an exhibition in Hong Kong in the fall, as had been considered. Instead, the Aztecs will play at Texas El Paso on Oct. 28.

TRACK AND FIELD

After seven events in the WAC championships, SDSU sits in fourth place with 26 points behind Brigham Young (66), New Mexico (61) and UTEP (40).

SDSU athletes who placed in the top six included: Fred Morgan, second in the javelin (200-feet-4); Pat This, fourth in the hammer (197-4), Rick Engebretson, fifth in the hammer (183-3); Tony Rossi, fifth in the long jump (23-2 3/4); Ken Flint, fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:33.19); and Karl Von Mohr, fourth in the shotput.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego left 10 men on base and lost, 3-1, to Cal State Stanislaus in the first game of the best-of-five NCAA Division III West Regional playoffs.

UCSD took a 1-0 lead in the second when Henry Jimenez singled, stole second, went to third on Gene Northway’s single and scored on Brian Crawford’s double. Northway was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the double.

Stanislaus scored one run each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, including the eventual game-winner on Greg Wakefield’s RBI single in the eighth. Stanislaus scored an insurance run on two UCSD errors and a hit in the ninth.

Loser J.J. Fisher (7-2) walked just two batters, but one scored the go ahead run in the eighth.

UCSD (23-17) and Stanislaus (21-17) meet in a doubleheader today beginning at noon. The series winner advances to Division III World Series.

U.S. International’s Kevin Tahan has been named to the GTE Academic District 8 first team. Tahan, who played at Patrick Henry, hit 16 home runs (a USIU season record), had 60 RBIs and batted .376. He has a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average at USIU.

SOFTBALL

UC-San Diego’s Dianne Morena was named as a second-team All-American pitcher in Division III.
