Southern Section Softball Playoffs : Mulcahey Pitches In for Glendale, 3-1

Senior right-hander Jeanie Mulcahey made her first start of the season Friday and pitched a seven-hitter to lead Glendale High to a 3-1 win over Ventura in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A Division softball playoffs at Glendale.

Mulcahey (1-0), who had pitched only three innings all season, allowed no earned runs. Ventura scored its run in the first after a Glendale error.

Glendale (18-5) scored three runs in the fifth on a double, sacrifice fly and three Ventura errors.

The Dynamiters will meet Sunny Hills, a 3-1 winner over Valencia, in the second round Wednesday.

1-A DIVISION

La Reina 4, Pasadena Poly 2--Junior right-hander Sherri Sisco (10-6) scattered six hits, struck out eight and walked two at Pasadena Poly.

La Reina (15-7) parlayed two errors and singles by Teresa Pasinosky and Jacie Nuesca into three runs in the fifth.

La Reina, which added another run in the sixth, managed only four hits. The Regents will meet Village Christian in the second round Wednesday.

Pasadena Poly finished 17-5.

Agoura 3, Maranatha 0--Sophomore right-hander Melissa Thatcher (19-2) struck out four, walked two and pitched a five-hitter for the host Chargers.

Agoura (19-2), which managed only four hits, took advantage of two Maranatha errors to score two unearned runs.

Agoura will meet Bassett, a 5-2 winner in eight innings over Ramona Convent, in the second round Wednesday.

Village Christian 1, Kern Valley 0--Lea Blankenship (11-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven for a complete-game victory at Village Christian.

Beth Sickels singled to right for the only hit for Village Christian (18-2). She stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

SMALL SCHOOLS DIVISION

Campbell Hall 24, Valley Christian 8--Allison Elkman was five for five with six runs batted in, and winning pitcher Margaret Archer added four RBIs for host Campbell Hall.

Jeanelle Meskimen, Abby Ackroyd and Joanna Paul each added four RBIs for Campbell Hall.
