Section Softball : One Run Does It for El Capitan

Lin Files led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a bunt single and finished the inning by scoring the winning run as El Capitan defeated visiting Orange Glen, 1-0, in an opening-round San Diego Section 3-A softball playoff game.

Files went to second on an error by the Orange Glen shortstop on what could have been a double-play ball. She then reached third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Orange Glen, which made three errors, finished 12-11.

In other San Diego Section 3-A playoff games:

Mt. Miguel 3, Castle Park 0--Jennifer Olow hit a two-run home run down the left-field line in the third inning for host Mt. Miguel.

Patrick Henry 1, Mar Vista 0--Cindy Evans hit a home run over the Mar Vista right fielder’s head in the sixth inning. Patty O’Neal went the distance for Patrick Henry (16-7), allowing just two hits.

Chula Vista 2, Poway 0--Marcie Wolf threw a complete game, holding visiting Poway to three hits. Wolf also singled in a run in Chula Vista’s two-run first inning. Chula Vista (17-7) scored its other run on a double steal. Poway finished 16-9.

2-A Playoffs

San Marcos 1, El Camino 0 (10)--Shannon Frits’ infield single drove in pinch-runner Eryn Price in the bottom of the 10th for host San Marcos (13-8). Alisa Thomas (11-6) went the distance, allowing seven hits and striking out 11.

Santana 5, San Diego 0--Rebecca Aase went the distance for Santana (14-11), limiting visiting San Diego (13-6) to two hits. She also hit a two-run homer during Santana’s four-run third.

San Pasqual 5, University City 0--Sophomore right-hander Trilby Carson allowed four hits and struck out nine for San Pasqual. Shortstop Nikki Gannon made several key fielding plays and sparked host San Pasqual’s sixth inning rally with an RBI triple.

Rancho Buena Vista 7, Clairemont 1--AnnJanette Vituli was two for three with two RBIs, and Rachel Boyer and Kim Tiesen each went two for four with one RBI for host Rancho Buena Vista (20-6).

1-A Playoffs

Bishop’s 16, Borrego Springs 7--Holly Hanson was four for five with three RBIs and three runs scored for Bishop’s (22-1). C.C. Furey was two for three with three RBIs, and Maria Griffin was two for three with two RBIs for Bishop’s, which committed a season-high eight errors. Visiting Borrego Springs finished 14-7.

Mt. Empire 12, Calvin Christian 1--Stacie Peckham struck out 14 and pitched a two-hitter for Mt. Empire.
