Section Playoff Roundup : Escondido Rallies to End San Pasqual’s Comeback

Escondido High School scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat San Pasqual, 3-2, and move into the San Diego Section 2-A softball semifinals.

San Pasqual, which scored twice in the seventh to tie the game, left seven runners on base; Escondido stranded three.

Escondido scored its first two runs in the third. Jamie Gabbard doubled, then Michelle Crouch walked. Crouch and Kristan Haag later scored on singles.

In other 2-A playoffs:

Christian 2, RBV 0--In the sixth inning Nyree Hartman singled, reached second on a passed ball, was sacrificed to third before Tara Tanber singled for Christian (20-6-1). RBV finished 20-7.

Grossmont 4, San Marcos 0--Jenny Strauss led the Foothillers by going four for four and scoring two runs. Teammate Carla Parent went two for three, including a solo home run and two RBIs. Brenna Hancock struck out six for her 20th victory.

Section 3-A playoffs

Vista 3, Patrick Henry 1--Winning pitcher Kelli Schott struck out 12. She has 210 this season.

Vista scored in the third inning. With two outs, Cindy Rand singled and scored on a Michelle Webster triple. Danielle Jaime singled to score Webster.

With two outs in the fourth, Rene Richardson reached first on an error. Rand singled, then Schott followed with an RBI single.

Monte Vista 8, Chula Vista 3--Monte Vista’s Gia Wilkerson hit a two-run homer in the first. Teammate Kristy Howard went three for four with a triple and a double and also scored three runs. Pitcher Suzy Lawrence went two for three with two RBI, and struck out nine in five innings of work.

Mount Miguel 1, Madison 0--Mount Miguel pitcher Bernadette Cloyd struck out eight and Madison’s Natalie Hurlbert struck out 12. Hurlbert, however, got took the loss after a fourth-inning error which allowed the game’s only run to score.

Section badminton playoffs: Top-seeded Bin Lam of Hoover cruised into the semifinals of the individuals championships with a 15-0, 15-0 victory over Crawford’s Tri Dam in a quarterfinal match at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.

Lam’s next opponent will be No. 7 seed Tom Sithiphong of Morse, who defeated Minh Trinh of Hoover, 15-8, 9-15, 15-8 in his quarterfinal match.

In girls’ singles, No. 1 seed Nhu Truong of Serra, No. 2 Hana Ohkawa of La Jolla, No. 3 Linh Truong of Hoover and No. 4 Siri Southida of Morse all advanced to today’s semifinal round.
