Glendale Kicks In for Volleyball Title

To hear some tell it, Glendale High rose out of relative obscurity and, against seemingly insurmountable odds, clinched the Southern Section 3-A Division volleyball title at Marina High on Saturday, beating top-seeded Harvard, 16-14, 15-12, 15-12.
That version, romantic as it might be, isn’t entirely correct, Glendale Coach Jack Trotter said.
“A lot of people are losing sight of the fact that we were the No. 1-rated team in the preseason,” Trotter said. “We played inconsistently for most of the season . . . it just took a while for things to kick in.”
When things did kick in, Glendale gave opponents the boot, sweeping Lynwood, Bishop Montgomery, Whittier Christian, Brentwood and Harvard.
Harvard had beaten Glendale in five games early in the season.
“I was surprised to sweep,” Trotter said. “I really didn’t see us walking right through people . . . We just got on a roll. We did it at the right time of the year, that’s the way to do it.”
